Why Playing as Centaur?

This is a short guideline for engine players, who never before played in centaur mode.

  • Playing as centaur means, you take over a much more active role, but try to make the best of the engine's suggestions.

  • Playing as centaur means, you decide on which moves (most probably: which engine moves) are going to be played.

  • Playing as centaur means, you can choose moves either from different engines or from different variations of the same engine (using multi-variation mode or using different pc's).

  • Playing as centaur means, you can analyse engine suggestions, before you move.

  • Playing as centaur means, you can decide on strategic issues, which are often connected with decisive pawn moves and possible exchanges of pieces.

  • Playing as centaur means, you can decide on a specific opening line avoiding random decisions by your book.

  • Playing as centaur means, you decide on the point of time, when to move.

  • Playing as centaur means, you have the advantage of a possibly better time management (for example executing forced moves quicker than the engine sometimes does, recapturing pieces etc.).

  • Playing as centaur means, you can learn a lot about chess.

  • Playing as centaur means, you will have more excitement and more fun.

  • Playing as centaur means, you take the risk of blundering in many ways (executing wrong move, as centaurs have to move manually; analysing wrong position in different board window or on different pc; deciding on wrong plan; getting into deep time trouble etc.).
    But: No risk, no fun!

  • Playing as centaur means, you should be prepared to use at least 2 or 3 computer systems, one for the online game (watching time, board position, new moves by your opponent, chat, internet connection, kibitz engine etc.) and 1 or 2 for various interactive analysis. You might also enjoy support from any helper(s).
